Greetings Travelers!
What an extraordinary few weeks Fritz and I have just spent in Greece. We touched down in Athens, settled into the design-forward A77 Suites by Andronis, and spent our first days reacquainting ourselves with a city that never stops surprising us, before boarding Ponant's Le Bougainville for a journey through the Cyclades few travelers ever experience this way. In this edition we bring you into that journey: the Athens moments worth lingering for, the small ship that felt more like a private yacht, and the Greek isles that revealed themselves one harbor at a time. We also have a remarkable expedition on the horizon this October, sailing the remote reaches of the South Pacific aboard Seabourn Pursuit.

Destination Feature: Athens Unmasked
Athens deserves more attention than a mere embarkation point. It is an engaging, multi-day destination in its own right. This capital rewards travelers who take the time to explore with its vast history, rich culture, and delectable cuisine.
There is a specific moment in Athens when the late afternoon light hits the Acropolis and the whole city seems to hold its breath. We caught it from the terrace of GB Roof Garden, where the Parthenon felt close enough to touch, a perspective reserved for those who know exactly where to look. Earlier that week, a visit to the Museum of Cycladic Art brought us face to face with the Jeff Koons "Venus" Lespugue exhibition, his monumental balloon sculpture in dialogue with a prehistoric figure nearly 28,000 years its senior.
For travelers seeking one 'destination' museum in Athens, we always point them toward the Acropolis Museum, home to the original sculptures and friezes once set high on the hill above. Athens has a gift for making the ancient feel startlingly contemporary, and three days in the city left us already plotting a return.
Distinguished Sanctuaries
Our Athens stay began at A77 Suites by Andronis, all clean lines and quiet, design-forward comfort in the heart of the city. From there, we moved to the Hotel Grande Bretagne. This hotel has anchored this square since 1874, and its GB Roof Garden, eight floors above Syntagma Square, offers a Wine Spectator-recognized wine list and an Acropolis view that makes every meal more memorable. We also toured the DOLLI and the newly opened Conrad Athens, a striking addition to the city's hotel landscape. it features a beautifully restored landmark building, featuring spacious rooms and extensive resort amenities.

Ponant Explorations: Closer to Nature, Closer to History
For over 35 years, Ponant Explorations has carried travelers toward distant shores far from busy maritime routes, aboard intimate ships staffed with expedition leaders, naturalist guides, and lecturers. Our home for this journey was Le Bougainville, the third in the line of Ponant Explorers, built to combine exploration and elegance with an open, state-of-the-art design toward the ocean. With only 92 staterooms, it felt like a private yacht, discreet and polished, right down to the Blue Eye underwater lounge tucked beneath the waterline. In Alliance with Smithsonian Journeys, two onboard experts brought true depth to every port we visited.
Our itinerary, Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean, carried us from Athens to Patmos, then across to Bodrum, Turkey, before returning to islands few itineraries reach at all. On Amorgos, time slowed to a stop: the island remains wonderfully untouched, its whitewashed villages clinging to cliffs above the Aegean, crowned by the 11th-century Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, built directly into a sheer rock face nearly 300 meters above the sea. On Milos, we traced the discovery site of the Venus de Milo, her likeness left behind while the original lives in Paris. Delos, the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, still carries the weight of a civilization that once ran the ancient Mediterranean, and Mykonos delivered the flair and energy it is known for. In Nafplio, Epidaurus rounded out the journey with one of the most perfectly preserved theatres of antiquity. And in Santorini, Ponant sailed us straight into the caldera at golden hour, champagne in hand, with not another ship in sight. A lecture from Smithsonian expert Peter Bobrowsky added context to the scene before us: layers of volcanic rock that, elsewhere on the island, also produce Assyrtiko, the distinctive wine completely native to the area.

Greece has a way of lingering in your thoughts long after you have returned home. 2027 is already filling for the months travelers most desire, June and July especially, and a handful of 2026 dates remain open for those ready to move quickly. For a more relaxed Greece experience, consider the shoulder period: April, or late May into June, or September into October. At this time, the islands are calmer without as many visitors.
