Kareem George Featured in Travel + Leisure: Discovering the Ancient Aegean
We’re excited to share that Culture Traveler founder Kareem George was recently featured in Travel + Leisure in an article exploring the ancient Aegean and the many layers of history, culture and natural beauty found throughout the region.
The feature, Delve Into the Ancient Aegean, follows an eight-day journey through the Southern Aegean aboard PONANT’s Le Bougainville, in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys. Along the way, Kareem explored historic islands, archaeological sites, dramatic landscapes and lesser-known corners of Greece and Turkey—all with the benefit of experts who helped bring the destinations to life.
Discovering the Aegean Beyond the Postcard
The journey included stops in Patmos, Bodrum, Amorgos, Santorini, Milos, Delos, Mykonos and Nafplion, offering a fascinating mix of ancient history, art, geology and island life.
From the Cave of the Apocalypse and the Monastery of Saint John on Patmos to the ancient ruins of Delos and the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae, the trip offered opportunities to experience places that have shaped the history of the Aegean for thousands of years.
One of the highlights was Delos, where archaeological remains—including sanctuaries, mosaics and monuments—provide a glimpse into the island's importance in the ancient world. With the guidance of Smithsonian Journeys experts, these sites became more than simply beautiful places to visit; they became windows into the civilizations that once flourished there.
A Different Way to Experience the Greek Isles
The journey also revealed the Aegean through its natural landscape.
On Santorini, geological insights helped put the island's dramatic volcanic landscape into perspective, while visits to islands such as Milos and Amorgos offered a chance to experience the extraordinary diversity of the region.
For Kareem, the experience was ultimately about looking beyond the postcard—understanding the history, people and stories that give these destinations their sense of place.
